The boat was carefully kept at Stander Marine in Leland and would only make brief appearances before purchase. Nearly back to her full glory, RenaBelle will be gracing the waters of Lake Leelanau once again after an extensive interior refit, exterior refinishing and new cabin top. Interesting fact; RenaBelle served the US Coast Guard during WWII as a patrol boat on the Detroit river. Its true, theres nothing like Ice Boating, and on this particular boat, it feels like Ice Yachting. I had been running the boat for years and making improvements along the way. The original was acquired from Brandon Cooper, a collector out of Wayland. It's a cab over design, round nose and features a small shallow step forward of the transom. These were called 3 point hydroplanes, 3 points of contact with the water, a contact on each sponson and the prop. I'm not sure why the step was there, as it would have very little contact with the water at speed, turning perhaps? The boat was built for a collector in Melborne, Australia. It was a family heirloom. Many great memories of youthful summers on the Leelanau Lakes, and now they were the caretakers after sometime in storage. It was decided to keep the boat and get it running. The family soon realized its valve and enjoyment and sought to protect the boat from further decay as most of the finishes were in poor condition. Boat was stripped, floors replaced, light wood repairs and refinished and BoBo was back gracing the waters of lake Leelanau nearly daily. What makes this engine special other than being an early 4 cylinder are the set of open exhaust elbows and pipes. They were especially designed for the early fours with the ribbing casting details on the elbows, to match the side plates of the engine. There are casting numbers and the baffle plate was stamped, making these parts factory components. Looking forward to running the unit. The original engine was delivered to the shop by an individual who found it on the side of the road ready for recycling pickup?! Imagine all the great stuff that is lost this way! He wanted something that would take him back to when he was 16. It features a Quincy manifold and custom straight pipe. Truly a fantastic and iconic engine. These inline 6 cylinders are my absolute favorite engines to restore. The difficulty is in rebuilding the distributor which can take up to an hour focused time and plenty of patience. Loading the cylinders can be trying to, but when restored properly they really sing! When mounted on a boat the provide smooth power with a look and sound that's amazing. This particular example was finished for Kim Logsdon of Illinois. Mercury built these private label Wizard engines from 1946 thru 1957. Slight changes in cowl, drive shaft housings and decal graphics gave them a different look. Some engines were tuned down as not to compete with Mercury's lineup. Grandpa Ralph probably gave me my first introduction to boats and boating. Seemed like he always had boats, he was a pilot as well. He kept a nice 20 or so footer down at John Cross's dock off Belvedere, on Round Lake in Charlevoix. My dad remembers it being powered by an old L-head, he thinks a Gray, and the boat kinda looked like a lobster/ workboat. She was called "Fish and Fun." Nearly for certain, it was on board "Fish and Fun" that I had my first ride in a boat. It was probably the first boat I steered. When this picture was taken in 2010, maybe 30-35 years later, Uncle Don and I gave him his last boat ride on our new boat, RenaBelle, which we named after his wife. Grandpa Ralph died the following March. What's funny is he remembered Rutland Tool of Detroit owning a similar boat which they took clients out on for fishing and such. Ralph recalls similar length, it was a Chris Craft for sure, with the same round windows. He also spoke of a live well off the back deck for bait fish. I showed him where there was such a device was, the holes are in the deck floor and the original switch was still on the dash. He thought that was pretty interesting, and asked where the boat was from. I mentioned Mr Held (I bought it from John Held) bought it from a man in Marine City, Michigan. "Well, thats pretty close to Detroit, isn't it?"
